Molasses Oatmeal Bread

Ingredients

  • 2 cups boiling water
  • 2 tablespoons Crisco
  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • ½ cup molasses
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • ½ cake yeast
  • ½ cup lukewarm water
  • Flour, as needed

Method

  1. 1 Pour boiling water over oats and let stand for one hour.
  2. 2 Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water. Add molasses, salt, Crisco, and yeast mixture to the oats.
  3. 3 Add flour to form a stiff dough. Knead well, then let rise.
  4. 4 Knead lightly, divide into two greased bread pans, and let rise again.
  5. 5 Bake in a moderate oven (350°F) for 40 minutes.
