Molasses Gingerbread With Maple Sauce
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup molasses
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 1/3 cups flour
- 1/4 cup shortening
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons powdered ginger
- 1 teaspoon powdered cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon powdered cloves
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon shortening (for sauce)
- 1 cup maple sugar
- 1 tablespoon flour (for sauce)
- 1 egg (for sauce)
- 1 cup boiling water (for sauce)
Method
- 1 Cream shortening and sugar. Add beaten egg, molasses, milk, baking soda, flour, salt, and spices. Mix well.
- 2 Pour batter into a greased pan and bake in a 350°F oven for 40 minutes.
- 3 For sauce: Dissolve maple sugar in boiling water. Rub shortening and flour together.
- 4 Add syrup to flour mixture, then beaten egg. Stir over heat until thickened.
