Molasses Gingerbread With Maple Sauce

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 1/3 cups flour
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons powdered ginger
  • 1 teaspoon powdered cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon powdered cloves
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon shortening (for sauce)
  • 1 cup maple sugar
  • 1 tablespoon flour (for sauce)
  • 1 egg (for sauce)
  • 1 cup boiling water (for sauce)

Method

  1. 1 Cream shortening and sugar. Add beaten egg, molasses, milk, baking soda, flour, salt, and spices. Mix well.
  2. 2 Pour batter into a greased pan and bake in a 350°F oven for 40 minutes.
  3. 3 For sauce: Dissolve maple sugar in boiling water. Rub shortening and flour together.
  4. 4 Add syrup to flour mixture, then beaten egg. Stir over heat until thickened.
