Molasses Buttermilk Bran Bread
Ingredients
- 3 cups graham flour
- 1 cup bran
- 1.5 cups white flour
- 1.25 tsp salt
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tbsp hot water
- 2 cups buttermilk
- 2 tbsp butter
- 0.5 cup molasses
- 1 compressed yeast cake
Method
- 1 In a large bowl, combine graham flour, bran, white flour, and salt. Stir until mixed.
- 2 Dissolve baking soda in hot water. In a separate container, mix buttermilk, melted butter, and molasses.
- 3 Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir vigorously until combined.
- 4 Crumble the compressed yeast cake into the batter and stir until thoroughly incorporated. The batter should be very stiff.
- 5 Place batter in a greased bread pan. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in bulk.
- 6 Bake for one hour in an oven with gradually increasing heat.
