Molasses Buttermilk Bran Bread

Ingredients

  • 3 cups graham flour
  • 1 cup bran
  • 1.5 cups white flour
  • 1.25 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tbsp hot water
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 0.5 cup molasses
  • 1 compressed yeast cake

Method

  1. 1 In a large bowl, combine graham flour, bran, white flour, and salt. Stir until mixed.
  2. 2 Dissolve baking soda in hot water. In a separate container, mix buttermilk, melted butter, and molasses.
  3. 3 Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and stir vigorously until combined.
  4. 4 Crumble the compressed yeast cake into the batter and stir until thoroughly incorporated. The batter should be very stiff.
  5. 5 Place batter in a greased bread pan. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in bulk.
  6. 6 Bake for one hour in an oven with gradually increasing heat.
