Milk And Water Sponge Cake
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 4 tbsp shortening
- 1 egg
- 1 1/2 cups milk and water (equal parts)
- 3 cups flour
- 5 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 cup finely chopped citron or seeded raisins (optional)
Method
- 1 Cream 1/2 cup sugar and 4 tbsp shortening until light in a bowl.
- 2 Add 1 egg, then mix in 1 1/2 cups equal parts milk and water.
- 3 Stir in 3 cups flour and 5 tsp baking powder to form a smooth batter.
- 4 Pour batter into well-greased deep layer-cake pans.
- 5 Bake in a moderate oven (350°F) for 25 minutes.
- 6 Near the end, brush tops with milk and sprinkle with granulated sugar.
