Maple Cinnamon Sweet Rolls

Ingredients

  • 2¼ cups flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons maple or brown sugar
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ¾ teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • 1/3 to 2/3 cup water
  • 1 egg
  • milk for brushing
  • extra maple or brown sugar for sprinkling

Method

  1. 1 Sift together flour, salt, sugar, baking powder, nutmeg, and cinnamon in a large bowl.
  2. 2 In a separate bowl, beat the egg with water and melted shortening.
  3. 3 Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix well to form a soft dough.
  4. 4 Turn dough onto a floured board and shape into small rolls. Place close together on a greased shallow pan.
  5. 5 Let stand for 10 to 15 minutes. Brush with milk and sprinkle with a little sugar.
  6. 6 Bake in a moderate oven (350°F) for 20 to 30 minutes until golden brown.
