Ingredients

  • 1 ½ cups sugar
  • 8 ounces shortening
  • 6 egg yolks
  • 5 cups sifted flour
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 ½ cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon mace
  • 6 egg whites

Method

  1. 1 Cream sugar and shortening until light and fluffy.
  2. 2 Add egg yolks, flour, baking powder, milk, and mace; beat for 20 minutes to blend.
  3. 3 Carefully fold in stiffly beaten egg whites.
  4. 4 Bake in a prepared pan for 80 minutes in a moderate oven (350°F).
