Macaroni With White Sauce

Ingredients

  • macaroni, broken into 2-inch pieces
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp flour
  • milk or water, as needed
  • salt to taste

Method

  1. 1 Bring a pot of water to a boil and add 1 tsp salt.
  2. 2 Add broken macaroni pieces and boil rapidly for 30 minutes.
  3. 3 Drain the macaroni in a colander and return it to the kettle.
  4. 4 Melt butter and whisk in flour until smooth to make a roux.
  5. 5 Add milk or water to the roux, stirring until thick like rich cream.
  6. 6 Cook the sauce for a few minutes, then pour over the macaroni. Season with salt and serve.
