Lemon Walnut Coffee Cake

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup melted Crisco
  • 1/2 cake compressed yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon lemon extract
  • 1/4 cup chopped English walnut meats
  • Flour (as needed)

Method

  1. 1 Heat milk slightly and add flour to make a batter.
  2. 2 Dissolve yeast in a little lukewarm water and add to the batter.
  3. 3 Allow the mixture to rise until light.
  4. 4 Add melted Crisco, beaten eggs, sugar, lemon extract, and salt.
  5. 5 Add enough flour to make a stiff dough and knead for ten minutes.
  6. 6 Let the dough rise until light again.
  7. 7 Place in a greased pan and let rise a second time.
  8. 8 Spread with melted Crisco and sprinkle with sugar, cinnamon, and nuts.
  9. 9 Bake in a hot oven (425°F) for half an hour.
