Huckleberry Cake With Custard Sauce

  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 4 tablespoons shortening
  • 2 cups flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 2 cups huckleberries
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • custard sauce (for serving)

Method

  1. 1 Mix sugar, egg, shortening, flour, baking powder, and water in a bowl.
  2. 2 Pour batter into a greased oblong pan and bake at 350°F for 20 minutes.
  3. 3 Combine huckleberries, cornstarch, brown sugar, and nutmeg in a saucepan.
  4. 4 Stir to dissolve, bring to a boil, and cook slowly for 5 minutes. Cool.
