  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1½ cups graham flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon shortening
  • 1 egg
  • 1½ cups liquid (½ water and ½ milk)
  • 2 tablespoons sugar or molasses

Method

  2. 2 Rub in the shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. 3 Beat the egg and add it with sugar or molasses to the liquid.
  4. 4 Stir the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and beat well.
  5. 5 Add more milk if necessary to create a drop batter consistency.
  6. 6 Pour into a greased loaf pan, smooth the top with a knife dipped in cold water, and bake in a moderate oven (350°F) for about one hour.
