Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 cake yeast
  • 1/4 cup lukewarm water
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon grated nutmeg
  • Flour

Method

  1. 1 Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water.
  2. 2 Scald milk, cool, then add yeast, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and flour to make a drop batter; let rise.
  3. 3 Cream shortening with sugar, add beaten eggs, remaining salt, and nutmeg.
  4. 4 Combine creamed mixture with yeast batter and enough flour to make a stiff dough; let rise again.
  5. 5 Shape into small balls, place in greased pan, and let rise until light.
  6. 6 Fry in hot shortening for 4-5 minutes until done; drain and dust with powdered sugar.
