Fried Bread Cutlets With Tomato Sauce
Ingredients
- slices of stale homemade bread, about ½ inch thick
- rich, well-seasoned vegetable stock
- beaten egg
- a little milk
- butter for frying
- tomato sauce or stewed tomatoes for serving
Method
- 1 Cut stale bread into ½-inch thick slices and shape them to resemble chops.
- 2 Soak the bread slices in seasoned vegetable stock until nearly saturated but not too soft.
- 3 Dip the soaked bread in a mixture of beaten egg and a little milk.
- 4 Fry in butter in a skillet until golden brown on both sides.
- 5 Serve with tomato sauce or alongside a dish of stewed tomatoes.
