Ingredients

  • 3 teaspoons baking powder

  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 teaspoons shortening
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1 cup chopped figs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 1 teaspoon sugar

Method

  1. 1 Sift together flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
  2. 2 Add shortening and rub in lightly.
  3. 3 Add milk slowly to form a stiff dough.
  4. 4 Roll dough out ¼ inch thick and cut into squares.
  5. 5 Place one tablespoon of chopped figs on each square.
  6. 6 Brush edges with cold milk, fold into envelopes, and press edges to seal.
  7. 7 Brush tops with a mixture of beaten egg, 1 tablespoon milk, and 1 teaspoon sugar.
  8. 8 Bake in a 425°F oven for about 20 minutes.
