Classic White Sauce

Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 4 cups milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon white pepper

Method

  1. 1 Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat, being careful not to brown it.
  2. 2 Add flour and stir quickly until well mixed and smooth.
  3. 3 Gradually add milk while stirring constantly to prevent lumps.
  4. 4 Bring to a boil, stirring carefully from the sides, until thickened.
  5. 5 Stir in salt and pepper. Serve immediately over vegetables or eggs.
