Classic Southern Corn Bread

Ingredients

  • 1 cup corn meal
  • 1 cup flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1½ cups milk
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons shortening

Method

  1. 1 Mix and sift the dry ingredients (corn meal, flour, baking powder, sugar, salt).
  2. 2 Add milk, beaten egg, and melted shortening; beat well.
  3. 3 Pour into a greased shallow pan and bake in a hot oven (425°F) for about 25 minutes.
