Chocolate Shortbread Sticks

Ingredients

  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 5 teaspoons cocoa powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1¼ to 1½ cups sifted pastry flour
  • pinch of salt

Method

  1. 1 Cream butter until soft, then gradually add sugar and beat well.
  2. 2 Mix in beaten egg, milk, and vanilla until thoroughly combined.
  3. 3 Sift cocoa, baking powder, and a pinch of salt with half the flour; stir into the wet mixture.
  4. 4 Add remaining flour to form a firm dough that does not stick to fingers.
  5. 5 Chill dough on ice until hard enough to handle.
  6. 6 Roll dough thin on a cocoa-dusted surface, cut into ½-inch by 3-inch strips.
  7. 7 Bake in a moderately hot oven (350°F) for 3-4 minutes, watching closely to prevent burning.
