Chocolate Orange Layer Cake With Filling
Ingredients
- 1/3 cup shortening
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 cup milk
- 1 3/4 cups flour
- 4 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3 cups confectioners' sugar
- Boiling water
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 ounces unsweetened chocolate
- 1/2 teaspoon grated orange peel
Method
- 1 Cream shortening and add sugar gradually, beating well.
- 2 Add beaten egg, half the milk, and mix well.
- 3 Add half the flour sifted with salt and baking powder.
- 4 Add remainder of milk, then remainder of flour and vanilla; beat after each addition.
- 5 Bake in greased layer cake tins in a 350°F oven for 15 to 20 minutes.
- 6 To make filling, add boiling water slowly to sugar to make a smooth paste.
- 7 Add vanilla, melted chocolate, and orange peel to the sugar mixture.
- 8 Spread filling between layers and on top of the cake.
