  • ¼ cup shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2½ ounces chocolate, melted
  • ½ cup mashed potatoes
  • 1 egg, separated
  • 3/8 cup milk
  • 1¼ cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ cup chopped nuts
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 6 to 8 marshmallows
  • 1 egg white
  • Few drops vanilla extract
  • 2 ounces unsweetened chocolate
  • ½ teaspoon butter

Method

  1. 1 Cream shortening, then add sugar and melted chocolate.
  2. 2 Mix in mashed potatoes until combined.
  3. 3 Add egg yolk, milk, flour, and baking powder; beat well.
  4. 4 Fold in nuts, vanilla, and beaten egg white.
  5. 5 Bake in a greased shallow pan at 350°F for 25-35 minutes.
  6. 6 Boil sugar and water until syrup spins a thread.
  7. 7 Melt marshmallows in the hot syrup.
