Chocolate Loaf Cake

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 3/4 cups flour
  • 1/4 pound Baker's chocolate
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 5 tablespoons sugar (for chocolate)
  • 3 tablespoons boiling water

Method

  1. 1 Scrape the chocolate fine. Add 5 tablespoons of sugar and 3 tablespoons of boiling water. Stir over heat until smooth and glossy, then let cool slightly.
  2. 2 Beat the butter to a cream. Gradually add the 1 1/2 cups of sugar, beating continuously.
  3. 3 Stir the smooth chocolate mixture into the beaten sugar and butter. Add well-beaten eggs.
  4. 4 Mix the baking powder into the flour. Alternately add the milk and flour mixture to the batter, mixing until combined.
  5. 5 Pour into two loaf pans. Bake in a moderate oven (350°F) for 20 minutes.
