Chocolate Braided Crullers

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 3 egg yolks, beaten
  • 1½ cups sugar
  • 1 cup sour milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 ounces chocolate, grated and melted
  • 1/3 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon boiling water
  • 3 egg whites, whipped to stiff peaks
  • Sifted flour, as needed

Method

  1. 1 Cream 2 tablespoons butter with ½ cup sugar. Gradually add beaten egg yolks and 1½ cups sugar.
  2. 2 Mix in sour milk, vanilla, and melted chocolate. Dissolve baking soda in boiling water and add.
  3. 3 Fold in whipped egg whites and enough sifted flour to make a soft dough.
  4. 4 Roll out dough, cut into oblongs, and divide each into three strips, leaving them united at one end.
  5. 5 Braid loosely, pinch ends together, and fry in smoking-hot fat until golden brown.
