  • 2 cups light brown sugar
  • ½ cup shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 3 tsp baking powder
  • 1 cup chopped raisins
  • 2¼ cups flour
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp cloves
  • ½ tsp nutmeg
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 cups sugar (for icing)
  • ¾ cup milk (for icing)
  • 2 tbsp butter (for icing)
  • vanilla extract (for icing)

Method

  1. 1 Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease two layer cake pans.
  2. 2 Cream brown sugar and shortening until fluffy. Beat in eggs until light.
  3. 3 Sift flour, salt, spices, and baking powder together twice.
  4. 4 Alternately add dry ingredients and milk to the creamed mixture, beating thoroughly.
