Brown Beef Stew With Drop Dumplings

Ingredients

  • 2.5 lbs stewing beef, cut into 2-inch pieces
  • Flour for coating
  • Hot fat
  • 3 pints boiling water
  • 2 cups flour
  • 0.5 tsp pepper
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 0.75 cup cold water

Method

  1. 1 Cut beef into 2-inch pieces, roll in flour, and brown in hot fat.
  2. 2 Add 3 pints boiling water, bring to a boil, then cook slowly for 1 hour.
  3. 3 Mix 2 cups flour, pepper, salt, and baking powder. Add cold water to form a dough.
  4. 4 Make dough into balls and drop into the stew. Cover and boil fast for 12 minutes.
  5. 5 Remove lid and cook for 3 minutes longer. Season and serve.
