Bread And Butter Pickles
Ingredients
- 1 gallon cucumbers, sliced
- 8 onions, sliced
- ½ cup salt
- 2 green peppers, sliced
- 2 red peppers, sliced
- 5 cups sugar
- 2 tablespoons mustard seed
- 2 tablespoons celery seed
- 1½ teaspoons turmeric
- ½ teaspoon ground cloves
- 5 cups vinegar
Method
- 1 Slice cucumbers, onions, and peppers. Pack in ice, place a heavy weight on top, and let stand for 3 hours.
- 2 Drain the vegetables well to remove excess liquid.
- 3 Combine sugar, mustard seed, celery seed, turmeric, cloves, and vinegar in a pot. Mix well and bring to a simmer.
- 4 Pour the hot syrup over the drained pickles and simmer for 30 minutes.
- 5 Seal the pickles in hot jars.
