  • 3 cups buttermilk
  • 1 ½ tsp salt
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • ¾ cup syrup
  • ½ cup shortening
  • 4 cups whole-wheat flour
  • 3 cups bran
  • 1 ½ cups white flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ½ package seeded raisins or ¾ cup finely chopped nuts (optional)

Method

  1. 1 In a mixing bowl, beat together buttermilk, salt, baking soda, syrup, and shortening until thoroughly mixed.
  2. 2 Add whole-wheat flour, bran, white flour, and baking powder. Beat hard to mix well.
  3. 3 Pour batter into two well-greased and floured loaf pans and spread evenly.
