Bran And Raisin Buttermilk Bread
Ingredients
- 3 cups buttermilk
- 1 ½ tsp salt
- 2 tsp baking soda
- ¾ cup syrup
- ½ cup shortening
- 4 cups whole-wheat flour
- 3 cups bran
- 1 ½ cups white flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- ½ package seeded raisins or ¾ cup finely chopped nuts (optional)
Method
- 1 In a mixing bowl, beat together buttermilk, salt, baking soda, syrup, and shortening until thoroughly mixed.
- 2 Add whole-wheat flour, bran, white flour, and baking powder. Beat hard to mix well.
- 3 Pour batter into two well-greased and floured loaf pans and spread evenly.
- 4 Let stand for 10 minutes, then bake in a moderate oven (350°F) for 40 minutes.
