Beef Stew With Steamed Dumplings

Ingredients

  • 3-4 lbs beef neck, cut into pieces
  • Cold water
  • 3 carrots, sliced thin
  • 3 onions, sliced thin
  • Salt and pepper
  • Minced parsley
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 heaping tsp baking powder
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1 egg, well-beaten
  • Milk
  • Butter

Method

  1. 1 Place beef in a pot, cover with cold water, and add carrots, onions, salt, pepper, and parsley. Cover and cook until meat is nearly done.
  2. 2 Sift flour, baking powder, and a pinch of salt. Mix in beaten egg and enough milk to form a stiff batter.
  3. 3 Pour batter into buttered patty pans and steam over boiling water until dumplings are cooked through.
  4. 4 Remove meat and dumplings. Thicken the remaining gravy by stirring in flour browned in butter. Pour over and serve.
