Baking Powder Crust Apple Pie

Ingredients

  • 1½ cups flour
  • 1½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • cold water
  • 4 apples, peeled and sliced
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • cinnamon or nutmeg
  • powdered sugar for garnish

Method

  1. 1 Sift flour, baking powder, and salt. Rub in shortening lightly, then add just enough cold water to hold the dough together.
  2. 2 Roll out half the dough and line the bottom of a pie plate. Peel, core, and slice the apples.
  3. 3 Fill the crust with apple slices. Sprinkle with sugar and dot with butter. Season with cinnamon or nutmeg.
  4. 4 Roll out the remaining dough. Wet the edges of the bottom crust, place the top crust, and press edges tightly. Trim excess.
  5. 5 Prick the top crust with a fork. Bake in a moderate oven (350°F) for 30 minutes. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve hot.
