Ingredients
- 1½ cups flour
- 1½ teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1/3 cup shortening
- cold water
- 4 apples, peeled and sliced
- 4 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tablespoon butter
- cinnamon or nutmeg
- powdered sugar for garnish
Method
- 1 Sift flour, baking powder, and salt. Rub in shortening lightly, then add just enough cold water to hold the dough together.
- 2 Roll out half the dough and line the bottom of a pie plate. Peel, core, and slice the apples.
- 3 Fill the crust with apple slices. Sprinkle with sugar and dot with butter. Season with cinnamon or nutmeg.
- 4 Roll out the remaining dough. Wet the edges of the bottom crust, place the top crust, and press edges tightly. Trim excess.
- 5 Prick the top crust with a fork. Bake in a moderate oven (350°F) for 30 minutes. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve hot.
