Baked Vanilla Caramel Custard

Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • ½ cup water
  • 1 quart milk
  • 6 eggs
  • 4 tablespoonfuls sugar
  • 1 teaspoonful vanilla extract

Method

  1. 1 Boil 1 cup sugar with ½ cup water until light brown, then pour into a pudding dish.
  2. 2 Mix 1 quart milk, 6 eggs, 4 tablespoonfuls sugar, and 1 teaspoonful vanilla extract.
  3. 3 Pour egg mixture into the caramel-lined dish and set in a pan of water.
  4. 4 Bake in a moderate oven (350°F) until custard is set.
  5. 5 Remove and chill on ice for several hours before turning out onto a serving dish.
