Baked Tomatoes With White Sauce
Ingredients
- 8 large smooth tomatoes
- 2 green peppers
- 1 tsp salt
- 1½ pints milk
- 1 large onion
- 1½ tbsp sugar
- 1½ tbsp flour
- butter
Method
- 1 Preheat oven to 350°F.
- 2 Wash tomatoes and slice a piece from the top; scoop out a little of the tomato flesh.
- 3 Cut green peppers in half lengthwise, remove seeds, and place in cold water.
- 4 Chop onion and peppers together; sprinkle a little sugar and salt over each tomato and place in a baking dish.
- 5 Top each tomato with the chopped onion and pepper mixture.
- 6 Melt butter in a skillet, stir in flour to form a paste, then gradually add milk, stirring constantly until thick.
- 7 Pour the thick sauce around the tomatoes (not on top) and bake for about one hour.
