Baked Tomatoes With White Sauce

Ingredients

  • 8 large smooth tomatoes
  • 2 green peppers
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1½ pints milk
  • 1 large onion
  • 1½ tbsp sugar
  • 1½ tbsp flour
  • butter

Method

  1. 1 Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. 2 Wash tomatoes and slice a piece from the top; scoop out a little of the tomato flesh.
  3. 3 Cut green peppers in half lengthwise, remove seeds, and place in cold water.
  4. 4 Chop onion and peppers together; sprinkle a little sugar and salt over each tomato and place in a baking dish.
  5. 5 Top each tomato with the chopped onion and pepper mixture.
  6. 6 Melt butter in a skillet, stir in flour to form a paste, then gradually add milk, stirring constantly until thick.
  7. 7 Pour the thick sauce around the tomatoes (not on top) and bake for about one hour.
