Baked Nut and Raisin Rolls
Ingredients
- 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 4 teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 5 tablespoons shortening
- 1 large egg
- 2/3 cup milk
- Butter for spreading
- Raisins
- Chopped nuts
- Granulated sugar for sprinkling
- 1 egg yolk mixed with 1 tablespoon cold water
Method
- 1 Sift flour, baking powder, salt, and 1 tablespoon sugar together in a bowl.
- 2 Whisk melted shortening, beaten egg, and milk together, then add to dry ingredients. Mix well.
- 3 Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead lightly. Roll out very thin.
- 4 Spread dough with butter, then sprinkle with raisins, chopped nuts, and a small amount of sugar.
- 5 Cut into 4-inch squares. Roll up each square like a jelly roll and press edges to seal.
- 6 Place in a greased pan, brush with egg yolk mixture, and sprinkle with nuts and sugar. Let stand 15 minutes.
- 7 Bake in a moderate oven (350°F) for 20 to 25 minutes.
