Baked Nut and Raisin Rolls

Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 5 tablespoons shortening
  • 1 large egg
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • Butter for spreading
  • Raisins
  • Chopped nuts
  • Granulated sugar for sprinkling
  • 1 egg yolk mixed with 1 tablespoon cold water

Method

  1. 1 Sift flour, baking powder, salt, and 1 tablespoon sugar together in a bowl.
  2. 2 Whisk melted shortening, beaten egg, and milk together, then add to dry ingredients. Mix well.
  3. 3 Turn dough onto a floured surface and knead lightly. Roll out very thin.
  4. 4 Spread dough with butter, then sprinkle with raisins, chopped nuts, and a small amount of sugar.
  5. 5 Cut into 4-inch squares. Roll up each square like a jelly roll and press edges to seal.
  6. 6 Place in a greased pan, brush with egg yolk mixture, and sprinkle with nuts and sugar. Let stand 15 minutes.
