Baked Huckleberry Biscuits With Berry Sauce

  • 1 cup huckleberries
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon shortening
  • ½ cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • Butter, for biscuits
  • Hard sauce, for serving

Method

  1. 1 Pick over and wash berries. Place in a small saucepan with 2 tablespoons of water and bring to a boil.
  2. 2 Add 3 tablespoons of sugar to the berries and boil for 5 minutes. Remove from heat.
  3. 3 Sift together 1 cup flour, 2 teaspoons baking powder, and ¼ teaspoon salt.
  4. 4 Mix in 1 teaspoon shortening lightly. Add ½ cup milk slowly and stir until combined.
  5. 5 Take a teaspoonful of dough at a time, roll into balls with floured hands, and place on a floured pie tin.
  6. 6 Bake in a 425°F oven for about 12 minutes.
  7. 7 While warm, break biscuits in half, butter each half, and place in a dish. Pour the warm berry mixture over the top. Serve hot with hard sauce.
