  • tart cooking apples, pared, cored, and sliced
  • sugar
  • cinnamon
  • grated lemon rind
  • butter
  • water
  • lemon juice
  • cream or hard sauce for serving

Method

  1. 1 Layer sliced apples, sugar, cinnamon, and grated lemon rind in a baking dish.
  2. 2 Dot each layer with small lumps of butter.
  3. 3 Continue layering until the dish is full, adding more sugar and butter on top.
  4. 4 Add a small amount of water and lemon juice to the dish.
