Ingredients

  • 1 bread roll, crusts removed
  • Butter
  • Grated cheese
  • 1 cup milk
  • Pepper
  • Salt
  • Nutmeg

Method

  1. 1 Slice the bread roll and remove the crusts to leave round slices of crumb.
  2. 2 Butter each slice, cover generously with grated cheese, and stack the slices on top of each other.
  3. 3 Boil milk with pepper, salt, and a little nutmeg, then pour it over the bread stack until well soaked.
  4. 4 Bake in a moderate oven (350°F) for 15 minutes, basting occasionally with the pan juices until the top is crusty.
