Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb Allinson bread
  • 3 oz grated cheese
  • 1 pint milk
  • 3 eggs
  • pepper and salt to taste
  • a little nutmeg
  • butter

Method

  1. 1 Cut bread into slices and butter them.
  2. 2 Arrange bread in layers in a pie-dish, spreading cheese between layers and dusting with pepper, salt, and nutmeg.
  3. 3 Finish with a good sprinkling of cheese on top.
  4. 4 Whip eggs, mix with milk, and pour over the bread and cheese.
  5. 5 Pour the mixture back into the basin and repeat pouring over the dish 2-3 times to soak the bread.
  6. 6 Bake until brown, about 45 minutes.
