  • sliced apples
  • bread crumbs
  • butter
  • sugar
  • ground cinnamon
  • ground cloves
  • ground allspice
  • molasses
  • water
  • cream or sauce for serving
  • raisins or chopped almonds (optional)

Method

  1. 1 In a quart pudding dish, arrange alternate layers of sliced apples and bread crumbs.
  2. 2 Season each layer with bits of butter, a little sugar, and a pinch each of ground cinnamon, cloves, and allspice.
  3. 3 When the dish is full, pour over it a half cup each of mixed molasses and water.
  4. 4 Cover the top with crumbs and place the dish in a pan containing hot water.
  5. 5 Bake for 45 minutes or until apples are soft. Serve with cream or sauce.
